The Smell

The new Light Blue formulation presents a creamy citrus opening that transitions into warm floral, woody, and ambery facets. These elements give the fragrance greater depth and a warmer, more masculine, sun-kissed character. Compared to the original Light Blue, which emphasized a bright, crisp, and sharper citrus accord, the new formulation feels rounder, smoother, and more enveloping.

The Open

The fragrance opens with an exuberant burst of Sicilian lemon and Calabrian bergamot, sharpened by the subtle spice of pink pepper. Radiant yet refined, the opening captures the vivid intensity of freshly expressed citrus rind, unfolding with a luminous freshness and an unmistakably sophisticated character.

The Projection

Light Blue makes an assertive entrance, with vibrant yellow mandarin pushing forward alongside the clean, ambery character of ambroxan. The opening delivers impressive projection, extending approximately 6–8 feet and creating a noticeable scent trail. This initial burst maintains its strength for roughly 60–90 minutes before gradually pulling closer to the skin.

The Dry Down

As Light Blue settles into the skin, the assertive brightness of yellow mandarin and the ambery warmth of ambroxan begin to recede, revealing a more nuanced and intimate character. Crisp aquatic facets emerge beneath the opening, gradually intertwining with earthy and softly textured woods. The result is a smooth, understated dry down that feels fresh yet grounded—retaining the fragrance's Mediterranean brightness while evolving into something warmer, quieter, and more sensual.

The Life

Light Blue offers impressive staying power, maintaining a noticeable presence on the skin for approximately 6–8 hours. When applied to clothing or fabric, its longevity extends even further, often lingering for 8–10 hours. Performance naturally varies with individual skin chemistry and environmental conditions, particularly heat and humidity, which can influence both the fragrance's intensity and its evolution throughout the day.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVES

I have a history with Light Blue. The original has been part of my fragrance world for years, so whenever something I know that well is reformulated, I approach it with a little hesitation. I want to give the new version a fair chance, but I also hope they haven't taken away what made me love it in the first place.

Thankfully, that didn't happen here.

The new Light Blue is immediately familiar, but it doesn't feel like I'm simply wearing the same fragrance again. The DNA is unmistakably there, but this version feels smoother, warmer, and a little more grown-up. The original always struck me as crisp and almost piercing in its citrus freshness. This one still gives me that burst of sunshine, but the edges have been softened.

Yellow mandarin comes through strongly on my skin, along with the clean, salty warmth of ambroxan. It makes quite an entrance, projecting around six to eight feet on me during that first hour or so. As the brightness settles, the fragrance becomes warmer and more relaxed. The aquatic character remains, but softer woods and an earthy warmth begin to emerge. There's something almost sun-warmed about it.

That's where Light Blue becomes personal for me.

In my imagination, it's Mykonos: brilliant blue water, white buildings against an impossibly blue sky, warm sand, citrus in the air, and that wonderful Mediterranean feeling of having absolutely nowhere you need to be.

But the memories it brings back aren't actually from Greece.

They take me back to Santa Barbara when I was in graduate school.

I remember the warm sand and that incredibly fresh California air coming off the water. I remember being younger, spending time near the beach, and having so much of my life still ahead of me. There was an ease to those moments that you don't necessarily appreciate while you're living them. You realize how special they were much later.

That's what I smell when I wear this.

Sunshine, salt air, warm skin, and the feeling of being young enough to believe there will always be another summer.

Maybe that's why this new version works so well for me. It doesn't smell exactly like the Light Blue I remember, and I don't think it should. I'm not exactly the person I was when I first fell in love with Light Blue either. The fragrance has become warmer, smoother, and more mature—and after more than 35 years of wearing fragrance, perhaps I have too.

Performance has been very good on me. I generally get six to eight hours on my skin and eight to ten hours on clothing. This is also a fragrance I genuinely want to wear in the heat. That's when it comes alive for me.

I give the new Light Blue a 4.5 out of 5. It doesn't completely replace the original for me—and honestly, I wouldn't want it to—but it takes something I've loved for years and moves it in a direction that feels right for where I am today.

For me, Light Blue isn't really about mandarin, ambroxan, woods, or any individual note.

It's Santa Barbara. It's Mykonos. It's the ocean. It's old friends. It's being young.

And maybe most of all, it's remembering what summer used to feel like.
